In supported living, we provide care services within a person’s own home, and we support them to access their local community. Our service users lead a free lifestyle and are supported to promote and develop their independence at all times. We support our service users to integrate into their communities despite the challenges that present to people with learning disabilities and our ethos is to ‘do with’ rather than ‘do for’.

Our supported living services are set up inconspicuously and you would not be able to tell them apart from any other house on the same street. We carefully select the properties that become our supported living services so that they are person-centred and have good community access and public transport links. We then closely match the staff team to the individual and carefully plan their care.

Due to our highly person-centred approach, this requires a person-centred individual to support our service users. You should be flexible and willing to travel, as our staff are allocated to different services across West Essex and Surrounding areas as opposed to having a single place of work.

You should be motivated, empathetic and be willing to lead. Patience is key as you will get to know many different people with different personalities and this takes time, as well as determination as there is a lot to learn and no one gets it right first time. As a support worker, you should be open-minded and should welcome new challenges as you will face these every. You will likely have to do things you have never done before and this should excite you rather than deter you, as a good support worker is always willing to try something new.
